And there's one to come that he has seen me try on, and he wanted to try it on. Somehow that's not the scary one. It was the like melted clown makeup.

I have one costume that I think it will have come out by the time this episode comes out, that I feel like I really need to stay away from Noah.

Oh my gosh. Now I'm so curious. Forget these episodes, let's just go get [laughter] those let's go do those. I can't wait. me

Also fun exciting thing if you love these types of stories as much as we do, we have an extra one available on Patreon. So once you finish this episode at the very end we'll give you a little teaser a little taste for what it is.

Mhm.

Uh but yeah then that extra story will be read on Patreon for the only phantoms tier. And you can go get a an extra dose of darkness over there.

Do you want to begin?

Sure. Sure I do. Which one do I want to pick?

Well so this is yeah I guess this is the oracle deck.

So it's whatever we feel.

This is the plant magic oracle deck.

What plant did you get?

I got the marble queen pothos which is the plant that I was looking for in the store a couple days ago when we were in Salem.

It's calling to you. Have you found it yet?

No well I can just go to like Home Depot.

Is there a word on yours?

Yes it says perseverance.

Mine says composure.

I have to keep it cool.

Keep it cool. And I got to trudge through.

And I have a fiddle fiddly fig.

Really? I feel like I'm great at keeping fiddle leafs alive.

Oh my god, not me. I've killed every single one.

Really?

Yes.

My saddest day was when I moved from LA. I feel like we're being too pleasant right now. I need to get us into the darkness in a second. But I had to leave it behind because I couldn't move it across country.

Well, that's the thing. I think like I had one in LA and it did fine. I think it's not a New England.

Mine in New England is doing great. Thriving.

What in the world? You don't have air conditioning in your apartment, do you?

I have a little window unit.

Okay. Mine definitely got killed by it. Being blasted by AC.

No, I'm saying, "Stop being so finicky. Be easier to survive.

You got to say, "You're beautiful.

You're perfect. You're doing great, sweetie.

Um but some of you are not doing so great.

Some of you have been afflicted by demonic presences.

Harker?

Harker.

Oh, interesting.

Hark the herald angels sing.

5:00

[laughter]

Too pleasant.

Hark the demons sing.

Okay, it's called Plagued by a Demon That Possessed My Brother and Tried to Kill Me. Hello, ladies and ghouls. Thank you for what you've built with your spooky show. I feel like I've learned so much while listening, both about legends and folklore, and about my own spirituality, which has unfortunately taken a backseat in recent years due to trying to keep up with the demands of life in a crumbling capitalist society. Yeah. Okay, my name is Harker, they/them, and I spent a large part of my childhood in a house that I believe was plagued by demonic presence.

Oh.

If not multiple entities.

What an interesting way to have spent your childhood.

When I was 8 years old, my family moved into a new home. It was in a brand new development built on top of what had once been farmland and fields and that sounds so much like my most haunted house. Used to be farmland, brand new development, bought first family living in the house, demon. Yep. At the time it was me, my mom, my stepfather, older

6:00

brother, and younger brother all living in the house. My older sister had left for college a few months before we moved into the house, so she visited occasionally. My stepfather came into my life when I was 6 years old and at first things were okay, but it became quickly clear that the only reason he was with my mom was out of obligation because she had his child, my little brother, out of wedlock. So, he felt a responsibility to step up as a father. Saying out of wedlock feels so whack these days. I know it feels archaic. It's like well, there's a lot of that's just like a normal family. Out of wedlock sounds great to me cuz marriage is tough.

[laughter]

And the paperwork is annoying. Legal fees, too much. Yeah. Do what you want to do. Okay, I think I speak for all of my siblings, his children included, when I say I wish he hadn't tried to step up as a father, but that's neither here nor there. We moved in with him initially when I was 6, but the house was small and soon he started looking into upcoming new builds with my mom. I thought this was exciting at first. I got to go with them

7:00

to see the house as they were building it, so I got to see the foundation and the walls come up and I was looking forward to having my own room and I continued to stay grateful for my room as time progressed, but let me just put it bluntly, I did not live in a happy home. The house was ruled by my stepfather's moods. He could find something to be angry about in any given situation and I learned very quickly how to listen for the sounds of his footsteps and how to tell based off that alone what kind of mood he was in.

That's so [snorts] sad.

Yeah. He became a dark presence that moved throughout the house and I believe it's his miasma of anger that allowed for the presence to thrive in our home.

Interesting.

That said, I don't

Which is unfortunate because like this the survival and like trauma response to living with someone like that is that you do become much more aware of your surroundings.

Mhm.

And if there's even lurking, it's like, okay, great. Now you're going to experience even more.

Yes.

Parker says, I don't think that his energy is actually what called the presence into our home. When my little

8:00

brother was around two to three years old, my mom started looking into daycare for him locally because she and my stepdad both worked full-time. So, she found a local woman who ran a daycare out of her home and the kids called her teacher Rita. And at first, my little brother loved going to see teacher Rita. He loved playing with other kids. He was learning new words. He was doing his ABCs and counting and it seemed like everything was great. But gradually, he started to not want to go to daycare. He would get upset if my mom said we were taking him there into the point of full-on fits. Something sinister was definitely happening in that house.

Ugh.

My brother's demeanor started to change at home. He had been your average toddler, curious, playful, and mischievous. But then, I don't remember much about this incident other than he made me fear for my life.

What?

We were probably arguing over a toy or a game one of us didn't want to share, something mundane. We were home alone, but I knew that my mom was going to be home soon. I think she ran to the grocery store for a forgotten ingredient or something. Anyway, my brother and I were arguing like siblings do. And then,

9:00

my brother ran into the kitchen. I heard the clanking of silverware and something in me registered pure fear. I remember walking towards the entrance to the kitchen to ask what he was doing. And he was standing by the silverware drawer holding a small but sharp knife.

Oh my god.

He had so much rage in his eyes as he looked at me and said, "I'm going to kill you." I didn't think.

Like, he's a young kid.

I didn't think. I ran and he chased and I managed to get to the bathroom, the first room I could think of with a lock and turned it. But he kept banging and slamming himself into the door and screaming about killing me and making me bleed and things of such grotesque nature that he should not have known. He was my baby brother. I was crying. I was begging for him to stop and screaming for help through the open window in the bathroom. Eventually, it got quiet, and I just sat there crying on the floor. When my mom came home, she was initially furious to find him alone in the living room and me locked in the bathroom until she saw how upset and terrified I was. He denied everything and was behaving completely normal. I don't remember how this

10:00

resolved, but

Wow.

I started to getting in the habit of putting a toy box in front of my bedroom door at night. That's how scared I was.

Jeez.

Well, it's like, yeah, cuz if he he obviously I mean, kids don't even have any self-control anyway.

Right.

Like, around that age, so that's so much scarier to feel like he basically was getting possessed.

Well, then also, what was he seeing at daycare that was like causing him to go get a knife, you know?

Right.

Feel like it's repeated behavior. After this, I started seeing so many things, and unexplainable events became frequent. I would see a child-shaped form running past my bedroom in my hallway when my brother wasn't home. I would also hear knocking and laughter from my brother's room when he was not home.

Mhm.

Things like this continued on and off for years. It escalated when I was in high school, um but I'll write more about those encounters another time. The thing is, I was raised in a very Mexican Catholic household. I no longer subscribe to any one religion, but I do think that intent and belief are the most powerful things in the world. I believe there are forces of evil, good,

11:00

and everything in between in this world, and I believe that regardless of what religion you practice, if you truly believe in whatever ritual or blessing or anything of that nature you partake in, you will be successful. One day, the priest from our Catholic church visited our home at my mother's request. He told us he was there to do a blessing to protect our home from evil. We prayed together, and then he moved through the house praying and leaving St. Benedict medals on every window. I was initially confused by all of this because for years my stepfather had been writing off all of the experiences, even ridiculing me saying I was imagining things. Thanks.

Also St. Benedict, I'm going to look it up right now. Like is is that a protective Yeah, why do I feel like there's different saints for different things?

I feel like Les Sower in Ghost in the Burbs talks about that in one of her episodes. It also took me until like 3 days ago. I had the realization when you and I were together, but then I was too embarrassed to say anything, so I kept it.

What?

That her book, Claire, the character Claire is because of all the Claires and like being able to see

12:00

Oh, yeah.

Did not make that connection at all.

[laughter]

Here I am 7 years later and I'm

being like, "Oh, I understand now why Claire's name is Claire."

Are you looking up St. Benedict?

Yeah, it's for protection against evil. Okay, makes sense.

I found out later the priest had come in secret and my stepfather never even knew of his visit. I also found out later what the catalyst had been for this visit, which I'll get to you in a minute. But so yeah, at this point in my life I truly believed in the prayers. And the activity was mostly quiet for years after that one blessing and sort of became an odd, almost unsettling quirk of the house. My brother's behavior mostly went back to normal after the blessing, although he has carried anger and has had a little bit of a mean streak, but he has not tried to kill me ever again.

That's good.

Yeah, that's good. [clears throat] Good news. We got a positive here.

to have to share that experience again.

But activity started ramping up again when I was around 12 or 13 and my mother gave birth to my youngest sibling, my sister. She would do those things that

13:00

babies do that often people explain away. She would focus really hard on empty corners or giggle at an empty space or erupt into tears for seemingly no reason looking terrified. Everyone but me brushed it off. When she was around 2 or 3 years old, she started talking to what she saw. She told me once while sitting on a bean bag in my room that there was a man made of shadows sitting at the end of my bed.

Oh, I don't like that it's not just shadow man. It's a man made of shadows. It like feels like there's multiple entities like coming and whirling

creating this like larger It like absorbed

Yeah. Other souls?

The poor unfortunate souls. Once my sister had disappeared from where she had been napping inside and we found her sleeping on our front lawn. When we woke her, she said the shadow man put her there. She had never sleepwalked and has not since.

So, he's like, "Get out of my house."

Maybe in a gentle way where you just

Yeah, but I She wasn't harmed. But

That's so dangerous. She's a child. She's like 2 or 3 years old.

Exactly.

OneSkin

The new OS-01 face rich cream from One Skin is unlike any rich cream I've ever used because it works in a completely different way than the rest. Here's what most rich creams miss. Cuz as we age, skin loses the collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid it needs to hold moisture, which means it becomes weak. And a typical rich cream will just sit on your skin surface, but it wears off. OS-01 rich cream works differently. It's powered by a dual phase hydration system that does two things at once. Delivers immediate hydration with a blend of bioactive humectants while the OS-01 peptide works at a cellular level to rebuild skin's collagen, elastin, and barrier strength. And I have noticed such a difference since using OS-01 face rich cream. It melts right into your skin. I put it on at night before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning, I look so fresh. demon who possessed my brother cont’d

Then those things from childhood started happening again. I was seeing phantom children in the hall again. I was hearing the knocking. Friends hated coming to my house. It gave them the creeps even before I told them about my experiences. There were more things that started happening when when I was home alone, like locked doors opening, slamming, and shut, lights turning on and off, and the persistent feeling of being watched. I was coming to learning more about my sexuality at this time and was rejecting the Catholic church. I was going through a crisis. I believe that is what made me so vulnerable to spiritual attack. Now,

17:00

when encountering negative energy, I announce my belief in love and light and that the only energy I will accept is that and not to do me or my loved ones harm. But back then, I was scared. And I felt like there was no God looking out for me to protect me. So, the most terrifying experience I I was an evening when I was home alone, maybe 14 years old. Ironically, my family was going to an evening mass for Ash Wednesday and I pretended to be sick so I could stay home, which I sorely regret. We have a heavy door in the kitchen that leads to the garage and we always keep it locked. This is one of the doors that I would often hear open and slam closed and our pantry is maybe 3 ft away from this door. So, my family is gone and I decided to go help myself to some Doritos. And I remember glancing at the garage door seeing it was definitely locked. I found the Doritos, I poured some into a bowl and when I returned them to our pantry, I heard the garage door begin to slowly creep open. And our garage has a motion light so if anyone had been in the garage, the light would have been on. But when I looked and I saw the

18:00

opening door, there was nothing beyond it but darkness.

Uh, it's so scary opening to a dark room and like the garage, too. Garage, basement, attics, no thanks. Yeah, cuz it's it's Is it a paranormal threat? Is it a person?

I booked it back to my room and as I ran through the kitchen, through the living room, all of a sudden the television in the living room turned on, volume blaring.

Ooh.

I turned into the hallway, trailing Doritos as I ran and right before opening the door to my room, I felt the unmistakable sensation of two fingers with sharp nails moving through my hair, curling at the base of my scalp,

Ooh.

pulling hard. I screamed.

Until you said pulling hard, part of me was like, I know that this is scary but that also sounds really nice.

No.

I screamed. I was able to reach my door knob and essentially fall inside, slamming the door shut behind me. I didn't get a good look but I know there

19:00

was no human being standing behind me in the hallway. I heard the television turning on and off constantly while I was in my room. I sprinkled holy water across my door that my abuelita had given me and all my questions about faith jumped out the window. I jumped into my bed, pushing myself into the corner of my room, the furthest from the door. The activity in the living room finally quieted down, and my family came home not long after. My mom and stepfather were pissed about Doritos being everywhere, understandably. And my stepfather did not believe my story, and my mom didn't defend me. Although, she did jokingly say, "I bet you wish you had gone to church, hadn't you?"

Not long I don't think church was helping this whole time.

No, but it was like the one day if he had gone with them.

Yeah, true.

Not long after my older sister was in town visiting, and I was talking with her and my mom. We were the only ones home, and somehow we got on the topic of creepy things in the house. We were talking about older memories, and my mom casually mentioned having to exercise a demon with your grandmother on the phone, and I was taken aback. Although, my older sister seemed like she had

20:00

heard it before, so I asked my mom what she was talking about, and that is when she explained. Apparently, back when weird things first started happening when my brother was little, an evening came when my stepfather was out of town. My mom had already told me to go to bed, so I was presumably asleep. And at this point, it was common for my little brother to go sleep with his parents, and that's what he was doing that night. My mom said she woke up around 2:00 or 3:00 a.m., and for some reason she was terrified. Like she was in a nightmare, but she couldn't remember what it was. So, she gathered her bearings for a moment before she looked beside her to see my little brother sitting, staring at her, smiling, but it wasn't his smile. She asked him what he was doing awake, uncertain, but hoping it was just something mundane like needing to go potty or being hungry. Instead, his smile grew larger, and he started to call her expletive after expletive, words that he shouldn't have known, saying things like, "Fuck you, bitch." Or, "Shut up, you C-word." All in what my mom described as a deep, gravelly, grown man's voice.

21:00

Oh my gosh. Also, is daycare not reporting back any weird things with his behavior at daycare? Like is it all

where he picked this demon up?

Yeah. That's kind of my question. Like, what are the other kids like? Is he the one with like behavioral Forget daddy daycare, it's demon daycare. Demon daycare. Or is he perfectly fine there and he's just freaking out because I don't know the demon is telling him not to go, that horrible things will happen if he ever leaves the house. He has to stay. He has to stay.

He's in the house. He's 3 years old.

My mom was terrified, didn't know what to do, so she called my abuelita. And my grandmother was a deeply spiritual Catholic woman and she almost always had a rosary in hand. So, when my mother called, my grandmother told her to put her on speaker and commanded my mother, "Pray with her." Together they recited the Lord's Prayer and Hail Mary to whatever was manifesting in my brother's body. My mom had holy water on hand and just like me, she shook drops of it on my little brother. But she said that as she did this, my little brother wailed in agony as if it was the most painful thing she had ever done.

22:00

No.

Like an exorcism.

That just It I know I've said it before, but it like it reminds me when Noah was going through everything, my mom was just like, "Let's just like put holy water on him." And the second she touches his forehead with the holy water, he like screams. It's like And we were both like, "What the hell just happened?"

[gasps]

My little brother was threatening her and my grandmother. So, my grandmother and my mom kept commanding the spirit to leave him, telling it that the only spirit allowed within him was the Holy Spirit and light of Jesus Christ. I don't know how in the world this didn't wake me up, even if my bedroom was on the opposite end of the house, but I'm glad it didn't. I don't know what I would have done if I had experienced that terror. As my mother tells it, my brother quieted after they prayed over him for an hour. And after this hour, my brother just went to sleep looking like a normal sleeping toddler. Turns out after this happened is when my mom had the priest come do the blessing of the house.

That's I know I keep saying two truths and a lie. We're getting so many good two truths and a lie. I had an exorcism

23:00

done on me as a toddler. That's a good one.

That's a really good

Although it depends on what context you're telling people. If that is like a fun dating icebreaker, maybe not the right thing to share.

Oh. I see if that were me, I would have shared it at work. It wouldn't matter.

You would have shared it in college.

I would have.

It would have been your fun fact. According to my mom, she tried to talk to my little brother about what had happened that evening, and all my brother could say was about the shadow coming from teacher Rita's house.

Hmm.

my mom pulled him out of daycare, and at the time I thought it was sudden, but now I understand. My mom believed that something was going on. Either teacher Rita was summoning something, or there was something in her house.

Ugh, it's reminding me a bit of our September Patreon bonus episode. So go over to Patreon if you're not already there.

The bone lady of Appalachia.

Yeah.

So there was also an incident once where my little sister was showering in my mom and stepfather's bathroom. It was part of their primary bedroom with a small hallway between the bathroom and the main bedroom. In this hallway, they have

24:00

their own walk-in closets, and they face each other. So my mom and I were chatting in the kitchen while my sister showered. She must have been like 9 or 10 at the time. When all of a sudden, we heard choking sounds coming from the bathroom. My mom and I called to ask if my sister was okay, laughing at first thinking maybe she got water in her mouth or soap in her eyes or something, but it continued. And then finally, we heard a strangled cry from my mother. So she went running. I froze, and then I followed after. My sister was okay, but very shaken. She said she had seen a shadow figure step out of my stepfather's closet, and when it turned to look at her, she all of a sudden couldn't breathe anymore. She was trying to scream, but nothing would come out.

It's so scary because I feel like so many examples of shadowy figures and shadow people are not this powerful. So it's like it clearly is something really, really dark that's just like kind of cloaking itself as almost [clears throat] a more benign version of what it is. Yeah.

It's literally hiding in the shadows.

25:00

Yeah. Unfortunately, there's not a neat end to the story. The activity has continued to wax and wane over the years, and I'll never really know for sure what happened to my sister that day. But maybe it's the same entity that attacked our little brother. Who knows? My sister continued to have experiences in the house until she moved out last year, but I haven't had many of my own aside from the occasional spine tingles of someone watching me. The phenomena experienced in the house by myself and my family members throughout our lives has shaped a lot of how I engage with spirituality and my opinions on spirits and demons. I can never forget the feeling of those fingers in my hair. They haunt my memory all the time. I know that there are forces out there that want to do us harm, and I think that whatever was there that night, whatever was in our house, wanted to do us harm. Stay spooky. See you on the other side from Harker.

I'd say like beyond whatever was there that night, it was like whatever was living there.

Following you.

Preceding the development.

It's also just so tough cuz I feel like it's common in a lot of possession and

26:00

demonic stories that we hear that families are going through so much

already.

Yeah.

And they feed off of that energy and the negativity and like the darkness and then just

the perfect formula. That's the recipe.

Yeah. And it's unfortunate because I feel like even if a family moves in and they're perfectly fine in the very beginning, like it is very soon after that things start to unravel.

Well, we're glad that you survived that and your little brother didn't kill you.

This is an I survived episode, basically.

Yeah, I survived demons.

played a spooky 90's game and met the devil

Okay, I have one called I played a spooky 90s game and met the devil.

My favorite kind.

Hi Sabrina and Karin, I started writing an email before like years ago, but got so overwhelmed, got distracted, and I never finished it. Where's that email now? Good question. I don't know.

Wasn't meant to be.

You're here now.

Shameless plug alert, this listener has two podcasts.

Ooh.

it.

Love it.

One called Profoundly Seen and one

27:00

called Petty and Unbothered. Profoundly Seen is an interview-style podcast where they talk to people about pop culture moments.

Fun.

And when they felt seen or like how they see themselves in those moments. And then Petty and Unbothered, they co-host with a friend and they talk about pop culture events both past and present and also read Reddit stories.

Love it. Great.

Also the names.

Great.

I know. Chef's kiss.

So good. Any Hoosiers, when I was in elementary school, the popular thing to do [laughter] play on the playground for some strange reason was Interview with the Devil. Or maybe I was the weird kid who convinced everyone to play the game with me.

Sure.

It's similar to the game that you talked about recently. Of course, I can't remember the name of that game now, but I'm sure you will. Okay, here are the rules as I remember them. All participants except for one sit in a circle and they hold hands. One participant that's in the circle is the observer while the one participant who's not in the circle is the guide asking

28:00

questions about the observer's experience.

It's kind of like red door, yellow door.

Is that the one?

There's so many where you're holding hands in a circle.

Yeah.

Well, shout out what game you think this is.

Yeah.

In theory, since everyone's holding hands and connected, they will be able to visualize what the observer is experiencing. Or maybe it's just offering them energy to do this work. Who knows? I was like eight, maybe. So, you enter into the space and the whole point is to go find the devil, but you're not supposed to look them in the eyes when you do find them.

Cool.

What happens if you do look them in the eyes? Well, allegedly, you go into a coma. So, it's third grade.

with these games? It's so crazy. [laughter]

And how does it travel the kids sphere?

Well, cuz the web early websites, it was like, I know. Scary kidsgames.com or whatever. And it was like, scary kids games. Yeah. Okay. So, it's third grade. I'm the observer. My friend is my guide, and I have a very overactive imagination. I'm describing what I'm seeing, and she asks me questions. What

29:00

do you see? What do you see? What I

Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?

[laughter]

I see a teacher looking at me. Who do you see? What are they wearing? Where are you? Are you planning to enter? What is happening? I'm saying this with like an adult voice, like, are you planning to enter? How are they making this scary as 8-year-olds? I'm not sure. Here's what I remember saying. I was walking along a sidewalk. The color scheme was dark. It was moody. There were several establishments, storefronts, glass windows. There were other people walking around, and they were wearing long hooded cloaks of different colors. I can't remember what I was wearing, but when I was younger, I always felt like I was older than I was. So, in this visual visual visualization, whoa, can't say that word today. I was definitely a bit older. I had decided to walk into a few stores and through the aisles. And I don't remember there being anything to purchase, just empty shelves and blank boxes on shelves. People walking aimlessly

30:00

around. And when I exited the store, I thought that someone was wearing a black cloak. This being was taller than everyone else and just stood there while everyone else was moving around them. Where I could see the other people's blank facial expressions, I only saw darkness under this downturned hood. It seemed as if they were slowly moving towards each other. I think I said to the guide in the group, "I think I see the devil." My guide said, "Walk away." I said, "I'm going to talk to them." My guide said, "Don't." But I did anyway. And then I saw their eyes. Bright, glowing red eyes. I could hear my guide calling to me. I could hear the bell ringing letting everyone know that recess was done. I could feel my friends shaking me, beckoning me to wake up, but I was still. I was with the black-cloaked figure. Just me. Every other hooded being was now gone. I don't really remember what happened between me and the devil, but finally I was able to shake myself out of it. I felt like I

31:00

had been with them for a while, but I know it was only for as long as it took for the bell to ring. Since then, I had always felt like there was something around me. I could feel their eyes. I could see it in my mind. My Catholic guilt convinced me that it meant I was bad and only bad people could ever meet the devil and walk away. Some other part of me said, "Well, it's because I'm powerful and I'm protected." That. I'm also Filipina and there are many ghost stories and spookies that have also happened around me and that I've experienced. Also, every person with a sixth sense or a specific gift could always tell that I had one, too. They would tell my mom about the spirits around me. And I'll have to share a story about spirits making me sick when I was a kid and tell you about how I think my dad's death opened me up to the paranormal. I have some heartwarming stories about his ever-present protection and why I also decided to close myself off to everything because death was following me. Anyway, I later painted a picture about what I saw during that game and I'll attach the image in the painting for you to share.

Ooh, I want to see.

I hope you enjoyed the story from Laura.

32:00

It's a very good painting and very spooky.

Oh, wow. Oh my gosh.

trippy.

Almost like a mirror reflection like

weird.

I'd be confused about like how to move about the space.

It feels like very um Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Mhm.

where the Death Eaters are convening.

Oh, yeah.

Scary.

Also, a little bit of Star Wars

Very yeah.

It's otherworldly. Like you can't quite pinpoint what is going on.

Right.

Yeah, Laura was eight and met the devil.

Casual. That's a good fun fact, too. I met the devil when I was eight years old.

[laughter]

Here's the two truths and a lie. We're going to come up with a third during this episode.

end of this. Um Wait, I saw a Tik Tok the other day where it was like someone was like the point of view like you're an atheist trying to understand why the devil's bad.

Mhm.

And it's like, okay, wait, so so the devil is bad because the devil takes bad people and then tortures them because they're bad and then that makes the devil bad?

33:00

[laughter]

I'm really trying to understand.

people are trying to make us say think the devil's bad.

It was just like this whole thing of like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

Yeah.

I was [clears throat] like, I appreciate that.

Well, it's kind of how I feel about Appalachia. Like I feel like and we did that whole episode about the devil in Appalachia and it made me a devil sympathizer and people got upset by it

[laughter]

cuz I was like, but in this context it feels like yeah, it's that same thing. It's like, well, it's punishing people who are not respecting the land or who are of ill intent.

Mhm.

So therefore, we should be like, yay.

Well, and if you get too deep into mythology and

Mhm.

there's a lot of Loki comparisons between if you're curious, if you're going to get insulted, don't look it up, but Loki and God. I'll just leave people with that and they they can do their own Googling and I like I like reading about that stuff.

Why are we only taking one narrative? Like let's let's think about things.

There was I saw a clip the other day and

34:00

I'm I can't it's from some podcast, but they were talking about the history of gossip and it comes from a specific word, but it used to be women would gossip I think during like labor and pregnancy, the other woman would come around and like share gossip. It had a different word, but of the same origin and to like try to distract the woman.

Oh.

And then the like church and everything basically made it a negative thing and deemed it dangerous.

Interesting.

Because they didn't want the women gossiping about their dirty little secrets. Um, okay, so naturally when you think of demons and scary things, what's something you think of?

Ouija board Ouija boards.

Yeah, I was like, do you want me to help you?

[laughter]

Ouija boards.

I was like, I think of multiple things, but one of them is Ouija boards.

them, yes.

ouija board demon

So, I found a story called Ouija Board Demon. It's from our listener, Kimberly. Hi, my name is Kimberly. I'm a huge fan of you two lovely ladies. I'm 32, so same birth year, and this whole thing started when I was around 10. It's been going on for a hot minute. One night, I went to stay over at my cousin Megan's house per, you know, usual weekend stuff. She was a year older and her sister Brittany, who was probably close to 17. So, that night, Brittany brought home a Ouija board. Also, when you're 10 and like the 17-year-old cousin brings home a Ouija board, you're probably so excited. So excited, but also like so scary at the same time.

feel like you have to like be cool cuz she's 17.

It's exhilarating. You're like, I can do this. I can play this. My mom said it's okay.

So, we lit candles, left the TV on mute for the extra light. And little did we know that while sitting crisscross applesauce around the board on the floor of Brittany's room, that this night was

38:00

going to change our lives. The candles and the TV went out at the exact same time. So, we went from a nice safe glow in the room to complete darkness. We all scrambled out of the room screaming and that was that. I do know that we did not close the board, and now I know that's a big no-no, but we were kids. We didn't know anything about the game or the rules because at the time that's all it was.

A game.

Right. And it's like through the history of Ouija boards, talking boards been marketed early days as just a game.

Something a way to touch your crushes hand.

Mhm.

Anyway, not long after that night, Britney started hearing noises from under her bed where she kept the board. It sounded like the planchette was sliding around by itself while inside the box.

Ooh, inside the box. I hate that.

She also started to see small shadows darting around the room. And nothing super crazy happened after that for a long time. There was a time that my sister and I purchased a pink and white Barbie Jeep from a flea market and this thing

39:00

started working without batteries. Like it would follow us around the room. What? We fixed this issue by putting it under our shared bed and cramming other toys around the edges to make a barricade.

You don't want to just get rid of it?

I know.

Why are you keeping a haunted Barbie Jeep?

feel like when you're a kid you don't really like understand

Yeah.

that you can just like throw something out maybe, I don't know. When I was around 15, Megan, my cousin, had now moved into Britney's old room. She said that ever since moving into that room, she was afraid to sleep in her bed. She claimed that she saw what looked like a person wearing a smiling mask in her room. It had appeared almost every night, usually by her computer desk in the corner or the end of her bed. And listen, I love spooky stuff. So when I heard this, I wanted to see it for myself. And I got my wish. One night, I lay in her bed. I was playing on my iPod touch and I all of a sudden got the feeling that something was watching me. So I glanced over towards the closet and there it was, staring at me from the

40:00

darkness, a entity that looked like it was wearing a white mask. The eyes were black sockets and the mouth wasn't something I would call a smile. It was open far too wide and it did not look happy, not at all. I kept eye contact. I reached over to her bedside lamp and clicked it on, and of course this entity dissipated. This thing tormented us for about a year. So much that we gave it a name, Carl.

Carl.

Carl. Damn it, Carl.

Classic.

If you watch Summer House, Carl's a mess.

[laughter]

Carl didn't just stay

House the Is that the one that's like a hot new single?

No.

Is it What's that one?

Summer House is the one with Amanda and West, and I told you the drama was

Oh, I'm thinking of Love Island.

Yeah, you're thinking of Love Island.

It's all It's all the same, and I want you to go on every one of those shows. It's the only way I'm going to watch them.

I don't want to go on any of them, especially not Love Island. But here's the thing, Carl didn't stay just at Megan's house. A lot of the time, if something happened my at my house, I would soon discover something

41:00

happened at her house, too. So it was like at the exact same time.

Right.

Megan kept seeing Carl, and Carl only seemed to be getting braver. At my house, it started with knocking on the walls and windows, and it progressed to the point where we started to hear it speak. My dad was actually the first to hear it talk. He was home alone and had gone into my sister's room to get his laptop that she had borrowed, and as he was walking out of the room, he heard a young girl say, "Hey." And from that point on, we renamed it Carla, because it's a girl. Then my sister and I

Or is it mimicking you?

Yeah. Then my sister and I began hearing it. I started sleeping with my bedroom door open so I could see down the hallway, and if anything spoke to me, I wanted to know if anyone was really there. One night, as I lay in my bed, it knocked on the wall beside my headboard. And what did I do? I knocked back. And then I heard my mom's voice, "What are you doing?" But it was not my mom, and

42:00

it was coming from inside my room where no one was but me. No, thanks.

So yeah, it's mimicking all of you.

There was also an incident when my sister was so freaked out by scratching coming from inside of her closet that she started crying

Ooh. and the scratching turned into laughter.

Ew. Oh, I hate this.

Yeah.

You know what it kind of reminds me of in a way is just like some of those I know that this is horrifying and this is like a poltergeist and demon, but it kind of reminds me of some of the ones that are a little more silly like Jeff the Mongoose or like

That's what you want it to be.

or Belmez where it's just like yeah, there's just like something else going on.

I think this is straight demon.

Well, it's just laughing. It's like "Holy crap, I'm having a good time."

laughing at her for being scared. She was crying. She was so scared. When someone laughs at you when you're crying demon, whether they're living or dead. Okay, so a little background on where my parents house is. My grandmother used to tell me that there was this tree they used to call the witch tree on the property. It was old and twisted and felt almost petrified. And I had always

43:00

been creeped out by it. My parents cut this tree down to put their house where they wanted and I know it seems out there, but maybe it's kind of important. It reminds me of the movie The Conjuring.

Cuz they have like the witch tree and everything.

Yeah.

Another cousin of mine, Michelle, lives with my parents due to her medical issues and she began telling us that she would see someone walking down the hallway towards her room holding a flashlight. According to her, it was a man and he was nice. And as crazy as it sounds, one afternoon my sister, father, Megan and I sat around my parents kitchen table with a Ouija board.

I love that.

We wanted answers. And the first spirit to come through was a man who claimed to be the one Michelle saw. He said that he had died on the witch tree and he was trying to help keep the bad spirits out.

Hm.

He liked Michelle and wanted to protect her. We were communicating with this man easily until no matter what we asked, the planchette kept sliding to no. So then we asked if the one we called Carla had taken over and immediately it slid

44:00

to yes. Through the board it communicated that it wanted to hurt us

[snorts]

and that it had been following us since the very first time we used a Ouija board with Britney.

So when you say, "Get out and goodbye."

It took us so much force to close out the session.

Well, it's also one of those things where it's like it's already out of the board. So it's like you're making contact, but like this isn't first contact. It like it's been around. Right.

There's so many small things that I probably left out, but this was such a huge part of my adolescence. This year of 2025, so last year, my dad was home on Halloween when he heard a knock at the front door. It was heavy enough that it made my mom's little scraggly dog go crazy. He went to go answer the door, and no one was there. Thank you for taking time to read this. From Kimberly.

My gosh.

On Halloween, a ghost knocking on your door and you opened? You're not letting them in?

[sighs and gasps]

It kind of feels like the theme is just letting anything in for that email. It seems too late. You've let it all in.

Yep. Sorry. The only hope now is that

45:00

Carl just becomes the protector. Carl's not going to become the protector. Carl's just Carl's like, "I got to keep you for myself, so I'll leave all the other bad guys out."

At least that one man is trying to help protect them.

Yeah. Ooh.

[laughter]

Sorry to Sorry to all of you. Okay. This

my 1880 haunted house in MA

is called my 1880 haunted Massachusetts house.

Ooh. Love it.

Hi, my name is Maddie. I've always had a very strong sensitivity to the spiritual world. I've had dreams, visions, predictions about many things throughout my life. My family is sensitive to it as well, including my stepfather who is Native American, which feels important to mention. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been drawn to the paranormal from watching ghost shows to having small encounters of my own, but nothing compares to what I've experienced now.

Great.

To start from the beginning, my mother remarried. We moved to from Texas to Massachusetts to live with my now stepfather. The house itself is small, a townhouse with an upstairs and then a downstairs unit, and I've lived in both

46:00

parts of the home. When I was around 10 or 11, I suddenly had this overwhelming urge to buy a Ouija board. Deep down, I already felt like there was something in that house and I desperately wanted to communicate with it. My stepfather agreed to buy one for me, though my mother was extremely against it. She's very religious. She knew the dangers that come with those boards. She had played one once before and she had experiences of her own. When we finally played it at home, I explained all the rules to my stepfather beforehand because I had researched them obsessively, but he did not follow them. He took his hands off the planchette before it ever said goodbye. He began asking disrespectful questions and that was the beginning of everything.

Yikes. See, that's why it's so important that you know who you're dealing with when you're using these

I know.

spiritual methods of communication cuz well, it's hard cuz it's like some people think it's funny. Like you do something and it's

47:00

It's not a joke.

You can't undo the joke.

Yeah. That's why I'm so scared to go do a paranormal investigation with strangers cuz I don't know what they're bringing.

risky.

I trust myself. I trust no one else. Anyway, I trust you. I trust you. [laughter]

Yeah. I feel like you kind of trust me.

I was going to say I have trust you cuz I feel like there's certain certain moments where you might just be like, "Oh, this is interesting."

[clears throat]

possessed.

[laughter]

Okay, this was the beginning of everything. Afterward, I put the board in my closet, the biggest mistake that I have ever made. Every single night at exactly 2:30 a.m., there would be scratching on the wooden closet door. Not random noises, scratching. Slow, deliberate scratching that would wake me up every single night without fail. We eventually threw the board away hoping that it would end there. It didn't. Almost every night after that, I felt something in the room, like a heavy presence. The kind that makes the air feel thick, your lungs tighten the second it enters. It felt wrong, like something was watching and waiting. I began seeing shadow figures standing over me while I

48:00

tried to sleep. I used to have this tall wooden dresser in the corner of my room beside my bed, and countless nights I would see a dark figure crouched on top of it, almost hovering over me, silently watching me in the dark.

How creepy is like gargoyle style? Just

perched up there.

Oh, and you know that if it stretched out, it was like probably obscenely tall and lanky. Uh.

Doors would open and close on their own constantly. One night I was out of my room when I suddenly heard my laptop turn on by itself. A video started playing loudly, and ironically, it was a paranormal YouTube video that I had not been watching. When I walked closer, I could hear typing on the keyboard like someone was trying to communicate through it. Is this what an internet troll is?

Is it really just demons running around typing?

the ghost from um Ghosts, the one

Oh, Trevor.

Trevor pressing the keyboard.

I've heard my name screamed loudly in the house followed by a massive bang,

49:00

only to realize I was the only person home. I even captured a photo of what I personally believe was a demon inside the house.

have the photo?

We do. It's one of those ones where I'm like I can't tell if it's pareido- pareidolia or like

Yeah.

There's some pictures before that we have received where like you and I don't see anything and then we post it and people are like, "Oh my god."

Yeah.

So, at least yesterday when I was trying to look, I wasn't really sure.

All right. Should we wait or should we look at it?

We can look now.

Oh, interesting.

Cuz it totally looks like a face on the wall.

It kind of has like clown face vibes where

Yeah.

But yeah, it could be pareidolia.

It almost pareidolia. It reminded me a little bit of like when people capture faces in like smoke or in fire, how the face appears, or even like a dragon starting to form.

Yeah. But here's the thing, I think the entity, even if it isn't that, it's counting on you seeing something and being scared. right?

And even if it's not the entity, it was feeding off the fear that she felt from capturing this photo.

And it looks like it's smiling or kind of has like a

50:00

tongue out. Uh.

One of the most terrifying experience happened when I saw a woman dressed completely in white wearing what looked like an old 1800s style gown. She walked directly past me and into my room. So, I refused to go in my room for a while after that.

There's so many spirits here.

I know.

My stepfather has had even more experiences than I have. Multiple times he would hear someone calling his name in what sounded exactly like my voice except every single time I wouldn't be home when it happened. One night while he was watching TV in his room, he heard me call his name and when he looked towards the cracked bedroom door, he saw what he thought was me standing there except the version of me he saw standing there had long jet black hair, but at that time I had blonde hair. He said whatever it was looked directly at him before slowly walking away. And he was really confused so he got up and went to my room to ask what I wanted,

Yeah, like had you dyed your hair?

Yeah, like [laughter]

51:00

what the heck?

Are you trying on wigs?

I was sleeping over at a friend's house that night. I hadn't been home since the morning. He called me in the middle of the night panicked asking where I was. I told him I'm I'm at my friend's house and he went silent before asking, "Then how did you just walk past my room?" I told him, "I have not been home all day." He later told me his heart completely sank after hearing that.

Fantastic.

As for my mother, she had multiple unexplained scratch marks appear across her body. She also was woken up unable to breathe feeling something pressing down on her neck while something heavy sat on her chest choking her while she was trying to sleep.

Great.

This house is the type of place that even if you don't believe in the paranormal, if you spend enough time here, you'll start questioning everything. I've had countless friends and family members stay over who were complete non-believers. And every single one of them left disturbed or questioning what they just experienced.

Fantastic.

Unfortunately, I still live in this home.

Well, if there's any skeptics out there,

52:00

go stay with Maddie.

with Maddie. [laughter] I eventually did research on the property and I found out that two people had previously died here in the upstairs part of the townhouse where we used to live. I now live downstairs. I experience far less activity than before, but my mother and stepfather still experience things regularly. At this point, I truly hope that whatever is in the house eventually passes on and leaves my family alone.

I feel like at this point they they're here to stay.

Seems like it. From Maddie.

It does feel like there's multiple things going on. Like I feel like the woman that just kind of like walked by her. Like that could have been someone who had passed.

Yeah.

But I don't know. All these other ones like the mimics, the amount of mimicry and the scratching and like the sitting on the chest or sitting up on the dresser, the choking. Like that is It's scary.

This has been in every email we've read so far. Like that's poltergeist activity.

Yeah.

Yeah, I don't love that. But I love demon stories. I love I love that you've experienced it so that we can read it, but I hate that you've experienced it

53:00

for your sake.

Yes, that's true.

And if you like these stories as much as I do, if you're as sick as I am, fantastic. We have an extra one for you over on Patreon. And I'll give you a little uh tease. It's another Ouija board story, but this time it's a group of girls in a mental hospital who created and made their own Ouija board and activated some serious [ __ ] in

Oh my god.

Did it happen on Halloween night? I feel like that's such a Halloween thing to do.

It feels very like Girl, Interrupted or What's the Is that the one where they're in the mental hospital?

I don't know.

Yeah, Girl, Interrupted meets like Charmed.

Mhm.

So yeah, join us on Patreon for that one. Um and then if not, we'll see you next week. We have more one more very haunting October encounters episode coming up for you.
